Febaury 09

I finished off evaluating my product a finished off the powerpoint presentation which i will present when evaluating my product orally.

Overall I am pleased with my product as while producing it i have found out new tequniques and information i did not know.

I have really enjoyed this coursework as it has enabled me to be creative and produce something with a twist on what a would normal do.

EVALUATION SCRIPT

Evaluation of magazine

I have decided to produce a classical music magazine. My product uses challenges and develops the codes and conventions of classic music magazines.

My front cover targets my audience well, according to my research after the production I conclude my target audience thought that the type face and colour scheme used suited my audience effectively.

I have used red and cream for my colour scheme . I have chosen these colours because after conducting my audience research the feedback I received was that these colours would be most suited to the intended target audience and the genre I have chosen. The colour red represents passion and love, the colour therefore represents the meanings that come through in classical music. Also I used the colour red for the masthead as it is known as a ‘classic’ colour.

The masthead head type face of ‘classic!’ is used to signifies the genre and target audience because of the simple curviness of the lettering. The lettering is embossed to shower power witch connotes with the music styles.

I am disappointed with the main image I have used. It is not to the high quality I would have liked it to be but unfortunately because of the limitations of the pictures I could take without completely disregarding the codes and conventions of music magazines. I have represented the social group by using a young women, the women represents the beautifulness that comes from classical music However it serves the purposes’ it needs to. The microphone that “Amiee Scally” is singing into easily identifies that it is a music magazine also as there are people around her as if listening to her at a live concert, this also identifies the style of magazine. The background of the picture is a cathedral; this represents the genre of the magazine as a lot of classical performances take place in such places as a cathedral. The main image anchors in the main cover line, this follows the codes and conventions of music magazines as the main cover line is always the biggest and linked to the main image, it also follows the codes and conventions of magazines due to the fact that I have used a different type face to the masthead. The masthead is always an exclusive font and it is never re-used for anything else in the magazine.

My positioning statement is ‘be part of the classical music revolution’. I have used this to distinguish the genre and audience of the magazine. ‘Revolution’ connotes; 21st century, youth, new turn around. Using this word sums up that this magazine is all about the new and what is in at the moment, it also aims the magazine at the younger audience of 20-30. ‘Be part of’ address it to you and makes you feel involved and personalises it towards you.

Continuing to follow the codes and conventions of music magazines I have included the date ‘December 08’ and also the price ‘£3.00’. Using a date shows us that the frequency of publication is monthly and not seasonally. I chose for it to be monthly as from researching existing classical magazines I found out that they are usually produced monthly. However to confirm my audience would want it to be monthly I surveyed a questionnaire, looking at my results my suspicions were fulfilled. My target audience would prefer to buy a magazine monthly rather then seasonally and even weekly.

After conducting audience research on my finalised product I found out that the layout of my contents page was easy to read and understand plus the use of images was effective to the articles.

The organistaion of my contents page text is rather formal and not scattered, I have done this as the music the magazine focuses on classical music and that sort of music is pure and simple, I have tried to reflect this in my designs. I have used red capital lettering subheadings to make it ‘easy identify and read’ I have used the form and conventions of contents pages.

I have used red again in the contents page to link the magazine together. Red signifies passion and love. The images I have used are separated by a thin white line to add definition and equality to them. I have set the pictures out in a collage style, I have done this to represent the youthful target audience as it shows everything isn’t perfect.

If my magazine got produced the best place for distribution would be music venues such as theatres and stadiums. They would be sold here due to the fact that the specific audience as they would be going there for specific reasons, having such a specific audience in such places is a perfect opportunity to sell the product. It could also be distrubited in shops such as WHSmith’s being distributed in a shop like this would enlarge sales as it is an easy accessible shop with a huge target audience ranging from young to old.

My target audience is 20-30 year old both female and male. I have decided to choose this audience as there is no existing magazines for this age group, after doing initial research I found out that younger people are not interested as much in classical music due to the fact that there is nothing out there aimed specifically at the target groups.

Throughout my designs and creating the main packagers I have used are Photoshop and Quark Express. I have also used Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and also Microsoft Excel. I have also used different methods of research; I used questionnaires for both before and after research, I also used internet research and existing magazine product research. Using Quark Express has been difficult as it has been my first time using it and it was hard to get to grips with it however with assistance from support teachers and putting my mind to it I figured out the in’s and out’s. Since using quark for my preliminary task I have learnt many more techniques including how to use advanced icons such as the ‘composition zone tools’, which lead me to a variety of other tools that was necessary to my design. Using Photoshop was easier for me to use as I have previously used it in previous situations. I enjoyed using Photoshop as I could get on with it on my own with minimum assistance. However I learned the best way to crop pictures precisely is to use the ‘lasso tool’ however on past productions (preliminary task) I used the ‘quick selection tool’ I discovered that the quality of editing is dramatically different when using the correct tools for the job.
