Febuary 09

Febaury 09

I finished off evaluating my product a finished off the powerpoint presentation which i will present when evaluating my product orally.

Overall I am pleased with my product as while producing it i have found out new tequniques and information i did not know.

I have really enjoyed this coursework as it has enabled me to be creative and produce something with a twist on what a would normal do.

EVALUATION SCRIPT

Evaluation of magazine

I have decided to produce a classical music magazine. My product uses challenges and develops the codes and conventions of classic music magazines.

My front cover targets my audience well, according to my research after the production I conclude my target audience thought that the type face and colour scheme used suited my audience effectively.

I have used red and cream for my colour scheme . I have chosen these colours because after conducting my audience research the feedback I received was that these colours would be most suited to the intended target audience and the genre I have chosen. The colour red represents passion and love, the colour therefore represents the meanings that come through in classical music. Also I used the colour red for the masthead as it is known as a ‘classic’ colour.

The masthead head type face of ‘classic!’ is used to signifies the genre and target audience because of the simple curviness of the lettering. The lettering is embossed to shower power witch connotes with the music styles.

I am disappointed with the main image I have used. It is not to the high quality I would have liked it to be but unfortunately because of the limitations of the pictures I could take without completely disregarding the codes and conventions of music magazines. I have represented the social group by using a young women, the women represents the beautifulness that comes from classical music However it serves the purposes’ it needs to. The microphone that “Amiee Scally” is singing into easily identifies that it is a music magazine also as there are people around her as if listening to her at a live concert, this also identifies the style of magazine. The background of the picture is a cathedral; this represents the genre of the magazine as a lot of classical performances take place in such places as a cathedral. The main image anchors in the main cover line, this follows the codes and conventions of music magazines as the main cover line is always the biggest and linked to the main image, it also follows the codes and conventions of magazines due to the fact that I have used a different type face to the masthead. The masthead is always an exclusive font and it is never re-used for anything else in the magazine.

My positioning statement is ‘be part of the classical music revolution’. I have used this to distinguish the genre and audience of the magazine. ‘Revolution’ connotes; 21st century, youth, new turn around. Using this word sums up that this magazine is all about the new and what is in at the moment, it also aims the magazine at the younger audience of 20-30. ‘Be part of’ address it to you and makes you feel involved and personalises it towards you.

Continuing to follow the codes and conventions of music magazines I have included the date ‘December 08’ and also the price ‘£3.00’. Using a date shows us that the frequency of publication is monthly and not seasonally. I chose for it to be monthly as from researching existing classical magazines I found out that they are usually produced monthly. However to confirm my audience would want it to be monthly I surveyed a questionnaire, looking at my results my suspicions were fulfilled. My target audience would prefer to buy a magazine monthly rather then seasonally and even weekly.

After conducting audience research on my finalised product I found out that the layout of my contents page was easy to read and understand plus the use of images was effective to the articles.

The organistaion of my contents page text is rather formal and not scattered, I have done this as the music the magazine focuses on classical music and that sort of music is pure and simple, I have tried to reflect this in my designs. I have used red capital lettering subheadings to make it ‘easy identify and read’ I have used the form and conventions of contents pages.

I have used red again in the contents page to link the magazine together. Red signifies passion and love. The images I have used are separated by a thin white line to add definition and equality to them. I have set the pictures out in a collage style, I have done this to represent the youthful target audience as it shows everything isn’t perfect.

If my magazine got produced the best place for distribution would be music venues such as theatres and stadiums. They would be sold here due to the fact that the specific audience as they would be going there for specific reasons, having such a specific audience in such places is a perfect opportunity to sell the product. It could also be distrubited in shops such as WHSmith’s being distributed in a shop like this would enlarge sales as it is an easy accessible shop with a huge target audience ranging from young to old.

My target audience is 20-30 year old both female and male. I have decided to choose this audience as there is no existing magazines for this age group, after doing initial research I found out that younger people are not interested as much in classical music due to the fact that there is nothing out there aimed specifically at the target groups.

Throughout my designs and creating the main packagers I have used are Photoshop and Quark Express. I have also used Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and also Microsoft Excel. I have also used different methods of research; I used questionnaires for both before and after research, I also used internet research and existing magazine product research. Using Quark Express has been difficult as it has been my first time using it and it was hard to get to grips with it however with assistance from support teachers and putting my mind to it I figured out the in’s and out’s. Since using quark for my preliminary task I have learnt many more techniques including how to use advanced icons such as the ‘composition zone tools’, which lead me to a variety of other tools that was necessary to my design. Using Photoshop was easier for me to use as I have previously used it in previous situations. I enjoyed using Photoshop as I could get on with it on my own with minimum assistance. However I learned the best way to crop pictures precisely is to use the ‘lasso tool’ however on past productions (preliminary task) I used the ‘quick selection tool’ I discovered that the quality of editing is dramatically different when using the correct tools for the job.

October 2008 (inlcued 28th and 30th September)

Monday 29th September
Today I got the specification for our coursework. I was also given 3 magazine front covers to compare the similarities and differences between them. This is what I came up with. I learnt that all magazines follow codes and conventions but I also learnt that specific genre’s follow specific codes and conventions which are relevant to the magazine.

Tuesday30th September
Today I was given 3 magazine content pages to compare. By doing this exercise I gained knowledge on codes and conventions of typical content pages, I also learnt that magazine front pages and content pages are closely linking as they use the same colour scheme and register. This is what I found out:(images below) I also learnt the meaning of some important key words. Learning the keywords has helped me develop my understanding of different concepts of media. I can now use the keywords I have learnt to expand on my media vocabulary. I will throughout my task add more keywords and meanings that I come across.

Wednesday 1st October
Today we were put into groups of 3 and discussed a variety of camera shot’s and frames. We also as a class discussed mise en scene. In my group of 3 we were asked to take a variety of pictures in certain shots and different mise en scene. We set off and completed half of the pictures we did not complete all of the pictures as we ran out of time. Today I learnt a variety of new camera shots that can help me in taking my images for my magazine cover I also learnt it is not just about the main image everything in front of the camera is put there for a reason and matters.

Thursday 2nd October
Today in my group we completed taking the remaining pictures; we then uploaded them to our computers and produced a revision sheet. The revision sheet is for my own use and will help me to remember the variety of shots.

These pictures link with these statements:

A low angle medium close up
A high angle long shot
An extreme close up of the time
A big close up of someone using a mobile phone
A close up of someone in nature
A two shot in medium long shot
An over the shoulder shot of someone writing
A very long shot conveying isolation
A medium close up of a teacher
A photograph which has connotations of friendship
A photograph which has connotations of stress

Friday 3rd October
In today’s lesson I completed the revision sheet and updated my blog. Today’s lesson was a round up of the week, so I revised camera shots and mise en scene.

Monday 6th October
Today I started on my allocated tasks; I created the name of my magazine, ‘Happy Students’ I named it this because of a quote off the website form Mr. Dyment’s (head of the school) introducing letter. I also started planning the coverlines and main image for my school magazine. today’s lesson was a productive lesson as I decided on my magazine name and main coverlines, this was helpful as I can now start my designs in the next lesson.

Tuesday 7th October
Today’s lesson was completely new, I learnt loads and enjoyed the lesson. Today’s lesson was all about an introduction to using quark express. We watched a mini presentation about the main functions and how to use quark express, as watching I produced my own instruction tool. After the presentation we had a go ourselves, I learnt different tecniques and even found some different tools the demonstrator hadn't shown the class. I found this lesson very helpful and informative. Hopefully the knowledge I have gained on quark express will help me with my coursework to produce something of a higher and prodessional standard.

This is what I did when having a tester go on quark express (above)

Wednesday 8th October
Today I did my design of my front cover. Also I started task 3.

Thursday 9th October

Friday 10th October
In today’s lesson I continued the designs of my contents page. I spent the entire lesson making sure my plans for both front cover and contents were detailed so I could easily produce them on the computer. I had finished all my designs so I thoroughly read through the tasks, on doing this I realised I miss read them and had not followed the tasks properly. I had designed my contents page with more then one student. As I was running out of time I made notes on the changes I will do. Although I had a big hurdle in this lesson I think I coped well and quickly and efficiently changed my ideas to suit. (unfornatley i do not have use to a scanner so my notes and sketches are not avaiable to see)

Monday 13th October
Today’s lesson was a recap of photoshop. I found this lesson helpful as I had not used photoshop for over a year and it refreshed my mind on the essentaials. As I was feeling confident I had a play around with photoshop after the demonstration. Doing this reminded me off what tools there are in Photoshop. I found this lesson a helpful recap.

Tuesday 14th October
I started my front cover designs today. Although I had not yet taken my pictures I could start it as I had a detailed plan. In today’s lesson I arranged the title and other texts.

Wednesday 15th October
I took the pictures for my contents and front cover and uploaded them to my computer. I began editing my pictures to go on my front cover and contents page.

Thursday 16th October
In this lesson I continued my editing of the pictures. After my editing I added the pictures to my front cover and re arranged some items to make it look more professional and eye catcing.

Friday 17th October
I updated my blog and finished off my front cover. With it being the end of the week I closed off all the loose ends.

Monday 20th October
As my front page was now completely finished I started on my contents page. To produce my contents page I used quark express. Using the skills I had learnt from a previous lesson was very helpful as with it being new to me I did struggle. However I felt that the lesson was productive as I made a good start

Tuesday 21st October
Finsihed quark

Wednesday 22nd October
In today’s lesson as a clad we discussed the evaluations. I found this very helpful as I learnt what to include and not include. Also in today’s lesson I added the arrows to my contents page. I ah not done this sooner as I had not yet learnt how to do it.

Thursday 23rd October
In today’s lesson I tied up all the loose ends before the half term. I updated my blog and added the final touches to my front cover however I could not do this to me contents page as quark was not working on the computers. Also in today’s lesson we revised the codes and conventions, this will help me with writing my essay over half term.

Friday 24th October

Today Quark was finished. I completed all work. Below are my finished products.
